The September 2019 issue of ‘the River’ reports on how long fish remain catchable once in the river system. We provide a reminder to look out for fish disease – and to take care when handling or keeping fish that are showing signs of disease, particularly Red Vent. Too gory for ‘the River’, but a warning on how an infestation of the Anisakis worm, which causes Red Vent, looks when in a fish is shown below…… and humans can be at risk of infection too without careful preparation of fish during the freezing and cooking process! (More information in ‘the River’ on this, and advice on cooking and eating fish with Red Vent can be found here.) Do take care!
Did you know that we can provide you with interesting information on the life history of your fish catch (salmon, sea-trout or Brownie)? The only ‘catch’ being that we need a few scales from the fish to enable us to do this!
An update on our summer monitoring system is made in this issue, and a reminder that the fish counter figures are also available online on a monthly basis.
