The Gala Fish Counter

The fish counter which has been constructed in the Skinworks Cauld on the edge of Galashiels is now fully operational and counting fish migrating up the Gala Water.  Further tests, and possible modifications, to the flow through the fish ladder will be required to ensure that the counter registers every fish which passes but, after a long and difficult process, the Foundation now has the equipment working .

The Gala Fish Counter has been installed with the assistance of the European Union LIFE fund and is part of a larger, Scotland-wide, project called the Conservation of Atlantic Salmon in Scotland (CASS) which is undertaking habitat enhancement work, removal of obstructions and  reduction in predator projects on eight river systems to help salmon stocks.
